About the Workshop

Back bending postures are an exquisite way to strengthen the spine and open the front of the chest. We tend to spend hours leaning over computers and mobile phones, causing our shoulders to round forward, which can create a plethora of problems in the spine and the rest of the body. Along with cultivating healthy postural habits in our daily lives, working with back bends can help to bring balance back to the body. Back bends cultivate patience, compassion and bravery.

 

Our spine is an incredible combination of strength and flexibility - of Sthira and Sukha. Strong bones and large muscles give us structure and protect sensitive nerves, while flexible ligaments and tendons allow the spine to move in all different planes. With regular back bends, we can help to protect this wonderful balance by increasing mobility while strengthening the supporting muscles around the skeleton.

  • Step-by-step prep towards safer practice
  • Exploring with tools like chair, block and strap
  • Do’s and don’ts
  • Developing a positive imprint of Back bends

 

Schedule & Description,

Day 1 :

6 July (Saturday) 10:00am – 1:00pm
     We will discuss and practise the fundamentals and foundations of back bends and cover:

-Stretching and strengthening the spine

-Bhujangasana

-Urdhva Mukha Svanasana

-Ustrasana

-Setu Bhandha Sarvangasana

-Urdhva Dhanurasana

 

2:00pm – 4:30pm

We will discuss and take a tour of the spine's anatomy, as well discussing the benefits and importance of back bends. We will explore the asanas in small groups to learn how to adjust, align and sync the breath. There will also be a video presentation that will provide a clear picture on safe back bends.

 

4:30pm-5:30pm

A soothing yin practice to complement the back bend

7 July (Sunday) 10:00am – 1:00pm

Day 4:

14 July (Sunday) 10:00am – 1:00pm

This will be a complete Hatha-based meditative practice working on back bends from all possibilities such as standing, sitting, supine, prone and inversions. Exploring shoulders and hip flexors towards a safe & mindful practice.

        We will discuss and illustrate back bends using the chair

  • How to lengthen
  • Shoulder-opening 

 

4:00pm-5:00pm

  • Restorative
  • Yoga Nidra
  • Create a Sangha and perform asanas of your own, address and appreciate each other and grow
